Or T.E.A.
First you have a trigger. This could literally be anything, and what triggers you might not trigger someone else. It could be an outcome at the table, something someone says to you, an internal thought, anything really.
Then you have the emotion, which is also different for each person. Something that triggers anger in one person could trigger amusement in another.
And, finally, you have action. Once you feel an emotion, and take action on it, thatâs tilt. You could be triggered, feel an emotion, and not act on it, and that wouldnât be tilt.
Now, most of the time when very strong emotions are involved, tilt exists as well. Itâs important that you donât delude yourself into thinking you can have a powerful emotional reaction, and not act on it, unless youâre sure this is true.
Letâs quickly go back to that last example I gave to show you how this framework works.
Say, youâre chip leader of an MTT and you lose half your stack, putting you back to average chips. The outcome of losing the chip lead is the trigger. Next comes the emotion (remember everyone is different here). Maybe you feel sad, maybe you feel angry, maybe you feel frustrated, or maybe you feel nothing at all. Letâs use frustrated here.
You feel frustrated, and to stop feeling frustrated you try to get back the chips you just lost. The action you take is to widen your ranges and start to gamble more. Those are your chips, and you want them back now. Does that sound familiar? Thereâs a trigger, which leads to an emotion, which leads to an action, which is tilt. Hereâs a list of common tilt triggers that Iâve seen in my clients and students.
